Wearing red in February is not just about celebrating love and Valentine’s Day, it may also be part of the National Wear Red Day that is celebrated the first Friday of February to raise awareness about American Heart Month.

Heart health is important as we age. Eating a well-balanced diet, increasing your physical activity, avoid smoking and moderating alcohol intake are all essential to preventing heart disease.

According to Aging.com. Heart problems are the leading cause of death in the United States. 

There are 10 signs and symptoms as you grow older that you or your caregiver should be aware of regarding your heart:

  1. Aching in the shoulder and chest
  2. Snoring and sleeping problems
  3. Difficulty with sexual function
  4. Irregular heartbeat
  5. Sore gums and jaw, mouth problems
  6. Puffy legs and feet
  7. Shortness of breath and fatigue
  8. Dizzy/Lightheadedness
  9. Persistent Cough
  10. Random bouts of cold sweats

As you age, nutrition remains important. Aging can promote, lack of appetite, changes in smell and taste, increased gastrointestinal disorders and more physical disabilities. This makes good nutrition challenging at times. There are many resources online including the American Heart Association and Heart Check Certified recipes. Don’t forget to watch your salt intake!

A reminder, that during the pandemic the tendency is to avoid the hospitals but when it comes to symptoms related to your heart – you need to call 911 in an emergency.
